Are these Play magazines the same publication that took the mantle of the Official PlayStation Magazine?
Quote from: bigkev on Jan 12, 2025, 09:58 PMAre these Play magazines the same publication that took the mantle of the Official PlayStation Magazine?
Short answer no, long answer from Wikipedia:
The magazine was first launched in 1995 by Imagine Publishing and was closed in 2016. Before it closed, the magazine had become the UK's longest-running PlayStation magazine. Issue 269, the magazine's final printed edition was published in April 2016 when it become a digital only publication for a short time. Prior to issue 249, PLAY came with a covermounted DVD every issue.
Future plc acquired Imagine Publishing and its brands in 2016. In May 2021, the PLAY brand was resurrected as a replacement for PlayStation Official Magazine UK. The numbering was reset and the staff were retained from PlayStation Official Magazine UK. The relaunched magazine was part of GamesRadar+. In October 2024, Future announced the magazine would cease publication. As the later version, referred to on this site as Play (UK) (2021) has now ceased to exist both are being steadily uploaded so you can find the first 12 issues of the later run available for download now and many issues of the original publication are still being added.

I'd put money on issue 108 having fluorescent colored wording on the cover. That's where the Fujitsu scanners have it over pretty much any other scanner out there with the chops to handle those colors way better than the competition hence my trying to keep the 5650c going. If it wasn't fluro then the publisher sure had bad taste with the color palette of that issue.
Jason submitted the supplement for PC Format #27 so I converted the issue from PDF to CBZ and included the supplement and the new version which has now replaced the original file.

Yeah this issues cover was supposed to be a bit more fluorescent but much like my scans of Playstation Power Issue 31, Essential Playstation Issue 12, Playstation Solutions Issue 23, Play Issue 89 and a few others, the colours are just slightly off. If anyone else can get a better scan of the cover of these (or any of my magazines for that matter) please feel free to send it over for updating. Would love to see them preserved as near to the original as possible.

Once again, this is scans by Jason, and edits by me. Jason did a fine job, as always, so it's through no fault of his that this was one ugly scan. Titan should be absolutely ashamed of the paper stock they used. Just terrible. These mags were all in like-new condition, aside from the aging, with many of them still sealed in their original polybags. But the discoloration from the aging of the paper is the kind of thing you usually only expect in newsprint, not magazine stock. For shame.
In case you're wondering, yes. Yes it DOES take ages to edit these damn things. But then I can't very well leave them as they are straight off the scanner, now can I?
(https://i.postimg.cc/SQdxG1zb/19.gif) (https://i.postimg.cc/3w2K0tH6/49.gif)
I had to be careful handling some of the pages of these issues because the print quality is that bad that the ink in the photos comes off onto your hands and leaves thumbprint marks on the page. Think of the cheapest newspaper print you can find, and then imagine something worse :) I had to consider some of these scans as a 1 shot (and hope they fed straight) because the scanner rollers left big track marks when passing over the darker pages.
So its a credit to Kitsunebi what an amazing job he does cleaning these up, the difference is immense!

gater donated and Jason scanned the June 1988 issue of Your Amiga.
Interestingly this issue was published by Argus Press who were responsible for publications like Computer Gamer. I thought they had disappeared by the late 1980's this was a surprise to see it. Later issues of this title were published by Alphavite so either they sold the title to them or it died and the later issues are a completely separate title. Not sure which so they are bundled together until I find out otherwise..

One of the GamesMaster mags I previously scanned have a reflective mirror cover which is cool since the lettering acts like a mirror (you can see yourself in the lettering) but doesn't come out well in a scan. I can't remember if my finger was immortalised on the scan of that one due to the reflection. ;D

Yes, you've said that before. I look forward to seeing your scans of the missing early issues, if you've got them (issue 1,2, and 4.) Of course it would be pointless to compare these with later issues since they'd obviously look better, being both newer and possibly printed on different stock. But if you've got the exact same issues as I've already released and yours are less brown, I'd have to guess that it might be due to the UK's infamously sh*tty weather perhaps being more conducive to preserving paper products for decades than the hot humidity of Japan.
None of that changes the terrible print quality of the mags themselves, though, which is something Jason had to deal with more than I. Seriously, mags whose ink comes off on your fingers? That's acceptable in newspapers, but piss poor printing for magazines.
It's all good though. It really doesn't matter how old a mag looks when it's scanned. If edited properly, it will look better than even the best preserved physical specimen, and be available for all to enjoy. Scanner:1, Box-in-a-closet:0

Also, I've gotta wonder...how exactly are you scanning your mags so that your finger could possibly be reflected?? Seems impossible even if you WANTED your finger in the scan...

This is the last issue of the title (and could also be considered the final issue of Computer Gaming World, since that's what it was before the name change). No mention is made of it being the final issue, though the cover date perhaps hints at some behind-the-scenes uncertainty, as it's labeled the April/May issue, despite being monthly up to this point. So presumably they gave themselves some extra breathing room to get things sorted, which turned out to be unnecessary since they were canceled in the interim.

This is the last issue of the title (and could also be considered the final issue of Computer Gaming World, since that's what it was before the name change)
I bought a lot of issues of
Computer Gaming World back in the day before throwing them out for which I kick myself now. I thought the artwork/style of the mags from about #
60 through to around #
120 were the best in my opinion and I stopped buying them about a year later. Can't remember out why I dumped them now. Sigh!!
Computer Gaming World #209 is now available.

Quote from: kitsunebi on Jan 22, 2025, 09:50 PMYes, you've said that before. I look forward to seeing your scans of the missing early issues, if you've got them (issue 1,2, and 4.) Of course it would be pointless to compare these with later issues since they'd obviously look better, being both newer and possibly printed on different stock.
I don't have the early issues. I only starting reading them from 1998 onwards.
Quote from: kitsunebi on Jan 22, 2025, 09:50 PMSeriously, mags whose ink comes off on your fingers? That's acceptable in newspapers, but piss poor printing for magazines.
It definitely must be weak printing paper because that's definitely never happened to me either.
Quote from: kitsunebi on Jan 22, 2025, 09:50 PMIt's all good though. It really doesn't matter how old a mag looks when it's scanned. If edited properly, it will look better than even the best preserved physical specimen, and be available for all to enjoy.
Absolutely! They're looking really nice. Much appreciated! 👍
Quote from: kitsunebi on Jan 22, 2025, 09:50 PMAlso, I've gotta wonder...how exactly are you scanning your mags so that your finger could possibly be reflected?? Seems impossible even if you WANTED your finger in the scan...
After I made that post I thought about it and you're correct, that's unlikely if I've scanned it and I did of course scan it flat. I think before I scanned the mag I was playing around with the reflective lettering since I'm not used to seeing something like that on a mag which is why in my mind I merged it having happened during my scanning. I think I've sold that particular magazine but anyway it was fun at the time having a little mirror on a mag.
Speaking of GM I did upload one regular issue. I wonder if Kiwi got it? It was the Jan 2007 issue.
Quote from: Kiwi on Jan 21, 2025, 03:53 PMInterestingly this issue was published by Argus Press who were responsible for publications like Computer Gamer. I thought they had disappeared by the late 1980's this was a surprise to see it. Later issues of this title were published by Alphavite so either they sold the title to them or it died and the later issues are a completely separate title. Not sure which so they are bundled together until I find out otherwise..
Your assumption is correct, mate. Alphavite bought both Your Amiga and YC from Argus (and possibly a 3rd mag that I can't recall...). BTW this was the first standalone issue of Your Amiga - before this it was a pull-out supplement in Your Commodore.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. Now I know I don't have to make another magazine category :)
Gregorick scanned PlayStation Max issues 02, 05 and 08 ....
