Listen! Lara Croft is calling you, in all of her plastic-in-lieu-of-silicone-horse-faced glory. I realize that the game character might not be quite as fugly as the toy, but it's still pretty amazing that such an unattractive character design became a sex symbol. But then no one was paying attention to her face, I guess.

This super-posh magazine is probably the highest quality mag I've ever owned, so far as paper quality and printing goes. Every page was printed on paper like it was an expensive coffee table art book.
Investigating further, it seems that Game Japan Quarter was sort of a special edition video game spin-off of Pachinko Kouryaku Magazine, a pachinko strategy mag which was published from 1987 to 2020 and has just short of 1000 issues. Imagine that. 1000 issues of mags about how to drop little metal balls into holes.
I hereby nominate a complete run of Pachinko Kouryaku Magazine to be Kiwi's next scanning project. Get crackin', Kiwi!!! ;)

Well, at two mags scanned per day that would only take a year and a half to complete BUT the cost of shipping those mothers out of Japan would probably amount to a decent sized mortgage!! :P

There was nothing wrong with her character design apart from the fact the toy makers interpreted her from the video games literally. For some reason the toy gives her ducky lips, what's going on there??? ::)

Well, I'm not defending the toy - it looks pretty bad, but to be fair:

I'd never really thought about it till just now, but I suspect that Lara's face is the reason she never caught on in Japan. In all of my years cataloging Japanese mags, I've only ever seen one Japanese cover with Lara on it (unlike the hundreds in just about every other country in the world). The Japanese ideal of beauty values a "small face," and although I may not be entirely sure what that entails, I think it's safe to say that the original design for Lara definitely doesn't have one.
Also to be fair, the toys got better (as did Lara's character design in the games) as the years went on. This is from just a couple of years later:

Congrats on finishing those. Don't forget that we also de-giganticized a bunch of Hubz's stuff from the Internet Archive before he pulled it and went dark.
For the handful of people here who care about Japanese magazines, not to worry - I've still got closets full of them to scan. Whimper. :'(
He is still active, he just changed his name to RevengeOfTheHubz

Not sure about that. The newer scans released under that name account are not of the quality of earlier scans so I decided not to use them until such time as I know for sure it's actually him.
EDIT. By quality I mean the later scans weren't color corrected etc.

Yeah, if it's the same guy, he stopped trying as hard. But considering all of the scans uploaded by that account say "Scanned by the Video Game History Foundation" I'd say it's probably Cifaldi or one of the people on his staff getting paid to do that stuff. Regardless, Hubz' Famitsu issues remain absent from the Internet Archive (unless someone else uploaded them), and the fact that the Revengeofthehubz account directly links people to a website taking cash donations, they're possible targets for future takedowns as well (copyright violations are always more likely to be challenged when $$ is involved).
Anyway, all that means for OGM is that we've got Hubz's older scans (since we had his permission) and we won't have any of Revengeofthehubz' scans (since we have no reason to believe it's the same guy, and thus don't have permission.) Granted, so long as they remain available at IA, it's irrelevant. So fingers crossed they stay that way. Although I personally have no need or desire to have multi-gigabyte 600dpi copies of mags bloating up my hard drives, so I'm kind of averse to downloading them myself.
So RevengeoftheHubz is for sure me just FYI, feel free to take whatever scans you want and host them here if ya'll like.
The scans with "Scanned by the Video Game History Foundation, please consider supporting them!" in the description were not done by me but were shared to and uploaded by me and some others to get out there. Quality isn't as high but better than nothing and the ones that weren't taken down are circulating away now for research etc.
Magnet links to torrents are available of sets I've scanned here so feel free to use these as well. - https://www.gamingalexandria.com/wp/magazine-sets/
Thanks for the clarification. Every mag in that account I've ever clicked on was of the "Scanned by the Video Game History Foundation" type, so I assumed they all were. But I admit I just randomly clicked on a sampling of mags from different upload times - I guess I just picked the wrong ones by coincidence. I haven't actually ever downloaded anything from that account, but that's only slightly because of the 600dpi thing (since resizing them for personal use is possible, if inconvenient) and more to do with the fact that I don't read or collect gaming mags anymore. I just continue to waste my time scanning them because...I have a screw loose in my head, I guess. Maybe a brain tumor? :P
