This issue of GPSGTNG (say that 10 times fast) is a bit of a leap forward from the last few I uploaded in design and content (granted, there's over a year between them.) The first couple of years of this mag were pretty devoid of any type of editorial voice - they basically existed to showcase screenshots of games and give a few condescending tips like "be careful not to fall into the pit." By the time this issue was published, writers actually had their names associated with their contributions, and that makes all the difference. Not that it's a deep read or anything - this is still a mag about children's games - but there are actually honest-to-god articles and reviews now, just like a real gaming mag LOL.
Also in this issue is my #1 choice for NES "hidden gem" - G.I.JOE. Not a well-known game at all, it has the stink of death all over it - a licensed game based on a toy/cartoon that was already pretty much dead in the water by the time the game was released. But it's actually quite excellent in my opinion. A platform game with almost RPG-like customization of your characters' stats and abilities made possible by seeking out hidden power ups and deciding who to give them to, with each character having distinctly different strengths and weaknesses, useful in different situations. And it's not just one game - beat it and a second quest opens up, more difficult and with the locations of all objectives relocated. And it's not just TWO games, either - beat the second quest, and a THIRD opens up LOL. That's value.

It's a magazine that reviewed NES games in the 1980s. ALL video games in the 1980s were for children. Thus all video game magazines from the 80s were mostly bought by children. There's nothing to be ashamed of there. Video games didn't really start trying to appeal to older crowds until the 32-bit era.
Especially in the USA, video games in the 80s were still considered toys. Grownups had their PCs. This isn't to say that adults can't enjoy children's entertainment. But there's a big difference in the intended audience between Civilization and Mario/Sonic.
Back from holiday and I feel more knackered then before I left :P
I'll be updating the site with newly received files from kitsunebi tomorrow after I've got a few chores done and had a rest overnight.

I ask because the computer gaming magazines I grew up with in the 80's and 90's targeted teens. The computer magazines my dad bought targeted adults but the gaming sections meant teens were catered to.

Maybe it depends where you grew up? In Australia we got both British and American magazines, so we saw both approaches. Its interesting in that some of the Commodore forums I'm on, US readers when discussing childhood magazines talk about fondly about magazines like Compute! and INFO which to me at the time as a teenager were dreary, dull magazines aimed at adults.
The UK never really saw the console crash and most games were on home computers which attracted a slightly older audience, so most gaming magazines were aimed at teenagers rather than younger kids. ZZap and other Newsfield magazines succeeded because they were mostly written by 16-18 year olds, just like their average readers, so were very relateable.
Next up from Jason are three issues of PC World (AUS)

Maybe it's because I work as a teacher, but I think my definition of what a child is may slightly differ from some people's. Teenagers are included in that range. Especially anyone 16 or under. Can a child read a magazine written for adults or vice versa? Of course. But that doesn't change the fact that video game mags in the USA throughout the 80s and most of the 90s were aimed at children, since that was BY FAR the biggest demographic of people playing the games. A mag written for teens (especially one written BY teens) is still a children's mag in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with that, especially if that's the demographic the games were targeted at, so I'm not being derogatory. Next Generation was about the only mainstream USA mag primarily about video games aimed at adults that I'm aware of (though there are probably a bunch or more recent "retro" themed mags aimed at nostalgic adults).
And I'm not talking about computer games, nor am I talking about the almost 100% different market that existed in the UK in the 80s. All computer gaming mags in the USA were written for adults. It was a very different market from video games. Pick up any issue of Computer Gaming World written in the 80s and tell me you can picture anyone under 40 truly enjoying it. :P

I love this. You know how some adults make a song and dance about how computer games/video games are for children, (some of them don't make a distinction between the two), but secretly they were the OG gamers all this time, spending all those weekend nights deep in some of that sweet, sweet Jack Nicklaus/Links/Civilization/Minesweeper/Poker action.
And now their secrecy/hypocrisy continues to this day with smartphones. They need to just own up already.

I grew up playing the NES and SNES as a kid, but I may have ruffled a few feathers suggesting that the target audience for the vast majority of their games was kids like myself AS IF THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT. I admit that my personal experiences living through that time may have clouded my ability to be impartial in my analysis. So I stand corrected. Here are a couple more mags featuring games made for only the most discerning of adults and sophisticates, like Darkwing Duck and Home Alone 2.
And how f-ed up is it that we already had video games being made about the Gulf War while bodies were still cooling on the ground?

I can't believe Computer Gaming World gave up their illustrious title with a 25 year history for something so generic as "Games for Windows," but I guess Microsoft was paying them enough to swallow their pride. Until they ceased publication less than a year and a half later. Was it the title, or just the changing magazine marketplace? Maybe both?

I liked the plain looking format of the issues prior to the mid 100's. Somewhere after that they changed the layout of the mag and I stopped buying them as I didn't like it. It's a shame the collection I had went the same way as my early PC Gamer (USA) mags, thrown out, or we'd have a much better set of scans than those made by the "official" website. Man, those ones are not the best!! :-\
I wasn't reading it by the time they changed their name, and honestly didn't even know they'd even done it until long after they'd ceased publication. I just find "Games for Windows" to be really generic sounding, and whether the quality of CGW had declined or not, it's a shame to give up a name with so much history to it. It would be like PC Gamer relaunching as "Computer Games." Oh wait, there actually WAS a mag called "Computer Games." Good lord, whatever happened to creativity?

As you can see, some of these magazines in my recent haul were very water damaged. Still, a scan of a damaged magazine is better than nothing until we can find better replacements.

Sharing these remaining Hyper issues is super appreciated! :) Checked #251 briefly and to be honest, I don't even recognize any damages - looks flawless to me. Again, many thanks for making these available to us!

I'm also glad the remaining issues of Hyper are being placed here. All we need is Issue 232, the two Japan specials, and the sci-fi special, and we'll have a practically complete run of the magazine. Of course there still are the hints and cheats guides, and some of the other poster books, but they'll come eventually.
I know that Jason has been scanning in some of those issues. So I wonder how's that progressing? He did say that it would be a slow process of scanning the issues. But thankfully, I am patient. ;D

I think you might be confusing watermarks (identifying marks/logos superimposed onto the digital Hypers) with water damage - damage caused to physical mags that have come into contact with water (on Jason's haul.) Watermarks can be edited out with some care if they aren't too obtrusive. Water damage is pretty much impossible to fix in editing.

I'm getting there :) I only have an old A3 Flat bed scanner and its not a book (edge scanner) so its quite a chore to get each page straight without pressing down too hard on the scanner top (to avoid damaging the magazine spine) and minimizing the warping that appears towards that centre part when done on these types of scanners.

I agree. The flatbed scanner does present some issues when scanning magazines. But with a little bit of careful operation and patience, the job does get done. At least the recent inclusion of previously absent Hyper Issues (like 243 and 251) should make your job easier. A lessened workload, thanks to the community. Keep up the good work! ;D
Jason scans a rather hefty 400pg monster of a mag in the shape of PC Plus #61.

And edited by me. In addition to the usual cleanup around the gutter and the joining of connecting elements across facing pages, I can only assume these mags were printed on at least two different paper stocks, since part of the mag had pages that were relatively white, and part of the mag had pages that were brown, especially along the sides. Took some work trying to make everything look uniform - often had to use magnetic lassos to exclude images from the editing field so they wouldn't get faded out when trying to color match the backgrounds.
Issue 7 features an interview with Mario designer Shigeru Miyamoto on the eve of the release of another game of his, The Legend of Zelda. It's missing an 8 page pullout (pgs 123-130), which consisted of maps for the game "Challenger." The pullout was affixed with glue rather than staples (you can still see where it was pulled free, along with the instructions to the reader to pull it loose from the mag.)
Jason provides us with one of the missing Hyper issues .... The Japan Special .... scanned on a flatbed so maximum effort involved in getting this out. Oh man!! I HATE scanning on a flatbed scanner :P

I get your pain. I'm in the same position which is why probably Kiwi is hesitant to upload any of the stuff I sent him since they're bookazine scans. My recent scan I'm just finishing now (which isn't a bookazine) doesn't have that problem so I see no reason it can't be uploaded so here's hoping. 👍

Family Computer Magazine #8 is available HERE (https://www.oldgamemags.com/forum/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;id=11797). This was scanned by Hubz and edited by me. Remember, the entire mag is read right-to-left, so you've got to set your CBR reader to Japanese/manga mode if you want the facing pages to be in the proper order. This was published around the same time as the Famicom Disk System launched (as well as one of its launch titles, The Legend of Zelda), so that's the big news this time around.

AralDite gives us the PC Powerplay Hardware Tech Special (2011). Unfortunately it looks like the lettering on the cover of this issue was gold metallic sheet and no scanner on earth can handle scanning that correctly. I know .. I've tried with silver metallic covers with identical results.

I dont know the exact publishing date of this first Japan special, but you can get a rough idea from some of the ads. eg page 10 has an advertisement for Metal Gear preorders "Coming in early 2012" so I'd say its a fair assumption to place this in the later half of 2011.Page 37 has a WWE game teaser for a 24th November release.
There is a second Japan Special which I've finished scanning and will be up here soon. There's also a SciFi special which I have yet to tackle....scanning these is a slow process and I need to take a break for a day or two after each one lest I go crazy :)
Also thanks again to our member Gater who loaned these to me, plus quite a few others for scanning, as well as some fantastic donations that will all appear here as they're completed.
Jason gives us the other Hyper Japan Special issue.
Again, this was scanned on a flatbed and due to the binding some blurring is noticeable down the spine as he didn't want to damage the magazine given it was loaned to him by a member for scanning.

Thank you, Jason, appreciate all your efforts! I looked a little more closely (didn't notice this in the first place): and in the bottom right corner of the front page is the publish year (in very small letters). You were correct, it was indeed 2011. Also, the 2nd Japan special is from 2013.

Which is ... interesting, considering you can download issue #20 from here. Retromags also only lists 15 in their database, not sure why there is no information available for issues later than 15. ???

As the person who created that particular Retromags database, I can tell you that the reason it goes to 15 is because I got that data from the Magazines From the Past site mentioned earlier. You've got to understand, no one who contributes anything at Retromags is from the UK. We're all pretty much from America and Canada, so we don't really know anything about UK mags (and as the only contributing member who is a resident of Japan, I created 95% of the Japanese magazine databases). UK peeps gravitate towards OGM since that's where the majority of UK scans appear, but that doesn't help with things like databases and the like since OGM doesn't have any. So whether it's at Retromags or elsewhere, what we need is people with firsthand knowledge of these magazines contributing information.

Thanks kitsunebi-san, hopefully this didn't get twisted: it wasn't meant as any kind of criticism, I appreciate the efforts from you and all others contributing to the database of Retromags. It was just that I was surprised to see additional issues after #15 pop up and was wondering why that is. Totally get it's difficult to research for UK-based magazines when majority of users coming from other regions of the world. Anyway, maybe we'll find out from someone who knows more than we do regarding Games World.
