Wow. :o I'm not gonna pretend that I'm politically correct all the time, but did they seriously print this on the cover?

Offensive racial slur combined with offensive cliche implying Asian women are prostitutes (they can't even tell the difference between different types of Asians, as that phrase isn't traditionally used to denigrate the Japanese.) Maybe this was commonplace in the UK, but you could definitely NOT get away with putting stuff like this on the cover in America if you wanted to remain in print. (And what game is that, anyway? - the character doesn't even look like it's from a Japanese game.)
Of course on the next issue's cover they make a play on words of the phrase "smack my bitch up," so I'm guessing this mag was probably written by teenagers? I heard that was a thing in the UK on some gaming mags.
From the magazines I've browsed it did seem that at the time the UK magazines were often more inclined to express such xenophobic sentiment. I couldn't hazard a guess as to why, however I do know that the UK's tabloid news media are infamous for unpleasant content so perhaps there is a leniency in print media over there?
As someone who remembers these times (and magazines) well I would say they were very much a part of the late 90's/early 00's lads mags culture. Nearly all British mags around this time were on a race to the bottom for edgy and problematic blokes nonsense. It certainly wasn't just targeted towards teenagers though, guys in there 20's were certainly a target too and lapped it up.
The way that women and minorities were represented during this period was pretty abhorrent. From page 3 girls sitting proudly on newsagents shelves to overly-sexualised beer adverts on tv it was hard to escape. With the slow decline of lads mags (eventually leading to campaigners getting covers changed or removed from shelves) and the rise of the internet a lot of these commonplace things in gaming magazines disappeared but that PS2 era is pretty bleak. It's also worth noting the effect that the extremely repugnant tabloid press had on nearly every facet of British life around this time (as IloveCats100 points out above).
I have previously pointed out how shocking I found some of the content in the PSG 24-7 issues I scanned but have seen similar stuff in PSM2, Play and others. From bizarre racial epiphets to reviews of pornography to straight up nudity it seems crazy to me that these mags (primarily aimed at children or teenagers) were printed at all. I would like to categorically state that my scanning of these materials is in no way an endorsement, purely preservation. They do serve as an interesting time capsule into that period of British life and one that thankfully, it seems most have moved past.

PSW was notorious for these types of comments (even screenshot captions) especially when it came to games such as Tomb Raider, Dead or Alive 2 and the WWE titles.
Desktop (AUS) #97 has been added by Jason. Never seen this desktop publishing title before. Interesting!!

Well said. As someone who was smack bang in the middle of the target demo during this era, I too remember it well. The Official PlayStation Magazine was wonderful and (largely) informative throughout most of the PS1 era. The PS2 era is when it really took a nosedive. My primary console during this period was the Xbox, and for the most part the OXM UK series was pretty respectful, at least when contrasted with the shite OPM2 UK were publishing. Still though, back then I lapped it up! Obviously nowadays it's merely a fascinating window into the distant past. In no small part thanks to your scanning efforts - I have archived many of these magazines and often finding myself frequently flicking through them. OPM, OPM2, PLAY UK, OXM, GamesMaster, EDGE, and more. It's such a guilty pleasure. I always seem to find something new, something shocking, something outright absurd that I never noticed before. Cracking stuff! But yes, this is a time capsule that's best left sealed and observed from a distance while pinching your nose.
Hey, she might have been the winners Mum just doing what she could to help her son win the contest!! ;D
Seriously though, if I were a parent of a kid looking at these mags I'd be far more concerned about the pages upon pages of adult advertising in Xbox/PlayStation mags encouraging readers to call 1-900 numbers to talk dirty or to purchase seedy roms full of images of woman doing things their wife wouldn't. Or shouldn't.
Sure, a bit of saucy probably isn't kind of what you'd expect in a console or PC magazine perhaps, but have you ever read American mags of the same era? OMG a LOT of them are so sterile because, well, that population tended towards productivity type apps, as kitsunebi has quite rightly pointed out a few times in the past, so those mags were boring as heck to gaming oriented folk.
I think gaming mags needed to be different in the UK because there were lots of titles vying for the consumer dollar. Future had the "official" mags which always attract people who think because they are official they must be good, so smaller publishers had their work cut out trying to claw market share. Invariably a few of them went down the racy path.
Of course some went too far indeed. Atari World did a computer porn article which evidently included an image of a woman playing with her dog in totally the wrong manner, and the publisher got shit for that one and the mag only lasted a handful of additional issues before folding as the negative press was a mag killer. That was 1995. Take CVG issue 69 with the exposed nipples on the "Game Over" ad. To this day I think the game publisher created that ad specifically to put into issue 69, for obvious reasons. That was in 1987 so "racy" has been around a LONG time.
Social mores have changed. People have become more politcally correct because, well, you can't call anyone anything nowadays without offending someone, so younger people seeing these mags don't have any idea of the world back then.
This issue is also a problem movie companies grapple with for older movies etc. Look at Fu Manchu movies from the 1950's calling people all manner of derogatory terms. But if you chop it all out it no longer represents accurately the movie it was when it was released. Companies like Disney are still trying to work out a way forward with some of their older titles.
Another four issues of Australian PC User are now available thanks to Jason.

Just for the record I have now found four different gaming mags from the 90/00s that have a feature called Japs Eye or similar. Makes me shudder every damn time.
My post may have focused a bit more on the sexual side of these mags but the xenophobia and derogatory terms went hand in hand with that.
Oh my goodness. In these more sanitized times, some might want to stay well clear of PC Accelerator magazine (US). Although an ex PC Gamer (UK) editor once considered it the best written magazine in the US at one point. Duality of man?

So after 61 issues scanned I am officially done with all of my salvageable copies of PSM2. Unfortunately I do not possess any of the other missing issues or if I do they are in terrible condition. I will keep an eye on any cheap ebay items to try and complete this set in the future. If anyone else has these to scan or can donate please let me know (especially the extremely illusive Issue 02!).
The missing issues are 02, 13, 26, 28, 30, 35, 36, 37, 39 and 51.
From Issue 78 onwards the magazine became PSM3 and now I have a ton of those to scan ::)

I don't see a problem compared to other lads magazines like Front. If you read a copy of Front your mind would be blown. More of a case of America culture and modern society being too overly sensitive.
Quote from: Gregorick on Mar 01, 2024, 11:11 PMThe way that women and minorities were represented during this period was pretty abhorrent.
It's all crap now. Much better back then. More risks taken.

I'd love to see Disney finally release Song of the South. Also congrats on Busty Dusty being the winner. ;D

Sorry, you don't get to decide which ethnic slurs are OK. "Jap" is offensive to most Japanese people (and others besides) so it's not OK to use, ever, unless you're writing dialogue for a fictional character who is supposed to be racist. Being sensitive to avoiding offensive racial slurs is not American culture, it's just being a decent human being.

I have
Song of the South but it really could do with a high def transfer. Getting away from the slavery connotations and all, it was the first movie to combine animation and real actors so it's a treasure purely from that perspective.
Unfortunately Disney are too PC to probably ever release it again which is a shame when you look at the fact they added a message at the beginning of the original
Aladdin to warn viewers of the racial caricatures used and that they were a product of the time so you would think they could do the same for
Song of the South.

That was one of the first VHS tapes I ever watched at home from a rental store. During the mid nineties. It was mind blowing technology to me, I was fairly young at the time.
I always think of Who Framed Roger Rabbit with the whole actors and animation concept. It kind of stole its thunder there.
Not to sound like a Disney nerd (I'm not), but The Three Caballeros beat Song of the South to the box office by almost two years as the first feature film to mix live action and animation. And Disney was doing it long before that in their short films. The first (I think) was released over 100 years ago!

Never seen that one!! Maybe it should have been "First to be released that won an Academy Award?" ;D
I've got pics of me as a kid at Disney World in 1986 posing with these guys (I know it was '86 because I won a free ticket for Disney World's 15th anniversary promotion).

Apparently '86 was the last time Song of the South was released theatrically in the US, for its 40th anniversary.
What's interesting is that the Splash Mountain ride was designed around the Song of the South characters and didn't even open until 1989. It closed last year for a redesign and will reopen this summer with a Princess and the Frog theme, finally wiping SothS from the public eye completely.
I haven't seen the entire film since I was a young kid, but I'm pretty sure I saw the Brer Rabbit animated sequences lots of times on the Disney Channel growing up because I remember them fairly well. You're right, a disclaimer is definitely the way to go, though in this case they might want to also make sure that any profits derived from any kind of release go into some sort of public fund or charity so that no one accuses them of profiting from stories seen as cultural appropriation. Of course, there's the problem right there - I'm pretty sure the Disney execs are thinking that if they can't profit off of a re-release, then why bother with the potential headache.
Song of the South continued to be sold in the UK on VHS tape for a number of years after it stopped in the USA (I have one of those still). It was also released on Laser Disk, never DVD back in the 80's, I still have a quality rip of that here somewhere.
I think my copy is the Laserdisc rip as well.
I remember Song of the South was frequently shown on Australian television, as part of The Magical World of Disney. So at least it had some coverage here.

I'm not as overly sensitive like you are to these things so it doesn't bother me. Jap is short for Japanese like USA is short for United States of America that's why the magazine used that abbreviation so not sure how it's racist. I mean most things are racist if you look hard enough I guess. Back then it wasn't considered racist and was the obvious use of an abbreviation.

I completely agree. I'm not sure if the UK even got a DVD release? It's on VHS I guess but yeah an HD release is ideal.
Song of the South is a weird one as it seems to indicate slavery is okay which would mean the film is racist yet the lead character is not only black but inspiring which would go against that narrative view. The lead actor did a good job and it's a shame people at the top can't look past problems that are insignificant to the good the film does.

Ignorance of racism doesn't excuse you from it. So let me educate you.
"Jap" is not an abbreviation, it is a racial slur. "Jap" is no more acceptable than any other slur, a list of which I'm not going to lower myself to typing out. It came into use primarily during WWII as a derogatory way of referring to the enemy at that time. If you are using it in your everyday speech, you are using racist terminology that is rude and offensive. Perhaps you were raised with those around you using this racist term, so you think it's normal and unoffensive, but you are now aware that it is not. An intelligent person would recognize this and stop immediately.
Also, it WAS racist "back then," it was just more accepted (by non-Japanese people) because there were more people ignorant to its offensiveness than there are now. The "n" word also used to be acceptable in polite society, but that doesn't mean it wasn't racist.
Again, if you think it isn't racist, YOU ARE WRONG. If you think it's not offensive, YOU ARE WRONG. If you think that YOU get to decide whether other people should consider it racist or offensive, YOU ARE WRONG.
It's fine that you aren't offended by it yourself, but please stop defending its use, because if other people are telling you they find it offensive and you shrug it off and accuse them of being "overly sensitive," it makes you seem like a terrible person.
I truly hope that this is the last word on this. No need for an apology (which would be the only possible appropriate response) - let's just drop it please. Most message boards have rules about using hate speech, and while this one might not, it's a good rule to abide by regardless.
Thank god a new "new release" thread just got started...
