Game Players MS-DOS Strategy Guide Vol.1 No.4 is now available HERE (https://www.oldgamemags.com/forum/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;id=12286).
Hope you don't like ancient-looking brown pages because I GOT RID OF THEM. This mag got the restoration treatment, a step and a half beyond simple editing, which requires a minimum of 5 minutes per page, since there are multiple stages of editing and color correction which have to be done independently from each other, selecting and deselecting areas so that the text, screenshots, and page borders can all be edited separately. Does the mag look better than it probably ever did? Yes (unless you like that old-timey parchment feel to your scans.) The screenshots in particular can be tricky since they're of such poor quality in the first place (taken with a camera?) where images from the same game will look wildly different from screenshot to screenshot based on whatever lighting conditions were present when the photo was taken.
This is Vol.1 No.4, but remember that Volume 1 of Game Player's was actually split between the PC mags and Nintendo mags. So this is only the 2nd ever Game Player's PC mag (and the first proper PC gaming mag, as Vol.1 No.2 was a PC game Buyer's Guide). This is also the final issue of Volume 1, so from Vol.2 onward, the PC and Nintendo mags were completely separate titles.

Likewise, sorry for the lack of new mags from me everyone. Got a bit of family emergency at the moment so haven't been and wont be near my scanner for a while. I know a few people are waiting on magazines they have donated so I apologise but it will be a while.

Badass Lara is best era. Modern era she's 'vulnerable' --- processing heavy emotional issues while still taking out entire armies of private security goons. And they go all in with the suffering, falling down cliffs, beaten up aspect. Replacing Desert Eagles with bow and arrow? Come on man. I completed all three of the 2010 games, they're still decent but I fear the peak has been reached.

I don't think we'll be seeing Lara anytime soon. The industry is about to implode and publishers are wary of investing even in established franchises. It would be fresh to have more middle-aged protagonists though, seeing that the median age of gamers has been growing in the past couple of decades. MGS4 did a tremendous job even though the corny cutscenes featuring other NPCs made me want to gut myself.
Anyway my only beef with old Lara is her wanton destruction of endangered species. Surely she could have used sleeping darts on all those semi-extinct wolves and tigers!

The median age thing makes sense but publishers seem to have thrown all theirs chips down on the under thirties, teens etc. I tried The Finals multiplayer FPS because it's free and all the bunny costumes and other 'wacky' stuff put me off. The same kind of thing happened to Rainbow Six. It was almost a simulator starting off and now it's aliens etc. As you say there may/will be a correction soon.

I don't know if they'd appeal but i believe the FPS games valorant and the current iteration of counter-strike don't use any sort of 'wacky' player skins but restrict skins to the gun models only, so perhaps you would find those to be more grounded?
BF2 is still by far the best FPS as far as I am concerned. Later games in the series just didn't do anything for me at all even though I bought them all except the latest one (BF2042?).
Maybe the games were okay but I think I got sick of EA's forcing you to buy new campaigns etc. BF1942 and BF2 had a thriving free mod scene going on. Hell, BF2 is just a full blown release of the Desert Combat mod which was fantastic!!
I must be a jaded old gamer I guess. Most of the games I play are arcade games as they only require a few minutes effort/thought. I don't have the time or inclination to slave away over one game for days/weeks anymore.

Forgot about Counter Strike, the granddaddy of a modern settings online FPS. Good to hear it hasn't lost its way. I sometimes dip in and out of some genres. There is still some hope out there and Ready or Not looks fun but requires a nuclear powered PC to run.

Speaking of Tomb Raider. Am I one of the rare few who actually thought Angel of Darkness was decent? Despite its technical glitches which had Lara walking through buildings and falling under the screen to her death, I always enjoyed the character interaction with its choice of dialogue responses and the investigative Parisian scenes which reminded me of those classic point n click adventures.

I played it on and off and besides the tech issues, aesthetically it's top stuff. The opening theme is fire. As great if not better than the original theme. I guess it has a dark early 2000's edge to it and I'm fine with that, I'll take that any day over some of the stuff releasing now. That gothic vibe was going around back then. Reminds me of a few Evanescence tunes which released around the same time.

Spot on about the dark edge comment. Everything from the moody murder plotting to the rain-drizzled settings injected the game with that grungy noir flavor. There were a few titles adopting that early 2000-era goth vibe too; Primal and BloodRayne are two that come to mind during that period.

One of the reasons I can't stand the reboot Tomb Raider games. The other being the gameplay. Unfortunately I feel Crystal Dynamics find everything about the game series that made the series a success 'problematic' which is why they're rebooting her again differently. ::)

I'm going to take a stab in the dark here for a moment and say envy for Core Design. Maybe even old Crystal Dynamics. They couldn't produce a series with a fraction of the legacy of Tomb Raider even if someone held a Desert Eagle to their heads.
