KarlyPilkboys we will almost have the entire run of PSW uploaded once I am finished with them.
Also wanted to say a huge thanks for the added PSW mags - always great to see PlayStation content from that era. Much appreciated :)
UK PlayStation (original PSX era, specifically) magazines seem to generate the most interest on this site. Speaks to the general demographic of users here, I suppose.
While I mainly came to see the Australian ones, the British magazines are also interesting, and in fact i remember some of them from my youth, which i believe means that they must have been imported to Australia too at some point.
More PlayStation reading for the weekend with NINE issues of PlayStation Power added to the download area thanks to Gregorick ...

I'm not British, Australian, or a New Zealander, and my gaming nostalgia runs deepest on DOS through Win98 PC games, so I'm not in the target demographic for this site, I suppose. I've never seen most of the mags uploaded here, and have never even heard of half of them.
So I get my revenge by scanning niche mags that no one cares about, like Japanese mags, action figure mags, and sci fi mags. Speaking of which.
Star Trek: The Official Monthly Magazine #13 (https://www.oldgamemags.com/forum/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;id=13335)
But hey, this is a UK mag that was scanned by an Australian (Jason), so it's at least hitting some of those demographics obliquely.

Anything here on out will be under the correct month as I haven't figured out a way to move individual posts from one thread to another.
UPDATE: spoke too soon. All sorted :)
Ace #18 is now available. Ahh!! The Konix Multisystem ... literally the "Supersega" vaporware of the late 1980's. All the mags of the day were touting how great it was but it ended up cancelled before ever seeing a release after the company went bust.

I was looking up the latest PSW contributions on Retromags to check on the ordering - can somebody explain this "weird" jumping between July & August for these issues:
Issue 29 - June 2002
Issue 30 - July 2002
Issue 31 - August 2002
Issue 32 - July 2002
Issue 33 - August 2002
This does not really make sense, or does it?
I also had a look at https://magazinesfromthepast.fandom.com/wiki/PSW : some numbers do not make sense: for example: issue 31 has printed "August 2002" on the cover page. Still, the Wiki lists 31 as "July". Why is that?
Phillyman created that mag's database. You could ask him, but you'd probably be wasting your time. He doesn't open any of my PMs and I'm the #1 contributor to that site. So I doubt you'd fare any better.
I can't speak for magazinesfromthepast, but one of the reasons weird dates are bound to pop up at Retromags is that it's an American site, and Americans are used to having dates printed on nearly all magazines. So when there ISN'T one, as is the case with many UK publications, we simply cannot leave it alone and feel a need to include one anyway. A mag without a date is seen as naked and broken, so better to just make up a cover date, even though it's just a guess/approximation.
At any rate, that particular publication seems to have made a conscious decision to erase any indication of a cover date. As you pointed out, it included cover dates until issue #31, the August issue. Issue 32 and 33 still display a vestige of a cover date in the UPC code, which lists them as 09 and 10, respectively (presumably the Sep and Oct issues.) But then with #34, even the UPC stops being a hint, as what should have been "11" is instead "34," and each successive issue simply shows the issue number in that spot. If the mag were monthly, it would be simple enough to continue guessing the dates, but UK mags are prone to release "holiday" or "Xmas" issues (and sometimes other seasonal issues, besides), so guesses are just that.
I've never seen an issue of that mag, but I assume there are no cover dates printed inside the mag either, or you wouldn't be asking. Better to just not worry about it. Any cover date listed on one of those files or database entries is made-up anyway, so while it might be inaccurate, it can't be incorrect.
Yeah, I had the same issue!
I also think it's the extra issues being added for Christmas. They would get 13 issues in a year rather than 12, as they released them roughly every 4 weeks.
I was looking through these and trying to figure it out myself. Looking at the "Next month in PSW" pages, they would have the release date of the next issue. And they were normally a month off....so if it was released in Jan, it would be the Feb issue....if that makes sense.
Anyway, I got to something like this for the issues around that time:
028 - May 2002
029 - Jun 2002
030 - Jul 2002
031 - Aug 2002
032 - Sep 2002
033 - Oct 2002
034 - Nov 2002
035 - Dec 2002
036 - Chr 2002
037 - Jan 2003
038 - Feb 2003

Some of our Aussie PSX mags had a lot of reprinted UK content.
Thanks kitsunebi-san, yeah I know the situation with magazines all of a sudden removing their published month on the coverpages (or any other pages inside the magazine itself) ... there are a few other mags where this is/was similar. My point was just the weird naming that was used in the Retromags DB: if issue 31 has a cover print of "August 2002", how can issue 32 be sorted as "July"? Makes no sense - if today is Monday, tomorrow cannot be Sunday ;D
You are correct that as from issue 32 on, there is also no cover date inside the mag. Usually I am just kind of double-checking the numbering with the published months on Retromags or MagazinesfromthePast, before archiving them on my NAS drive, so that I have a proper file name in use. No big deal though, I will then follow the numberings from the latter. Thanks for your input!

I think you already knew the answer before you asked - Retromags is wrong. True, any cover date at all given to those issues isn't official, but even as fabricated dates go, those are obviously wrong. But as I said, the person who created that particular database at Retromags is pretty much incommunicado at this point. I'd say it's unlikely to ever be fixed there unless someone starts uploading UK mags there and whoever starts linking files to the database notices the discrepancy.
Actually, without saying who in case it's not meant to be known, there's someone here that had been in talks with Retromags to release their scans there as well. Indeed, I was told to expect a massive dump of mags all at once, which were supposed to drop...over a month ago. Unfortunately, the same person who created the PSW database and doesn't read PMs is also the person who would be responsible for bringing over hundreds of mags, posting them to the downloads and updating databases, galleries, etc. That's a lot of work for someone who usually doesn't even log in to the site for more than a few minutes per week. And there are other outstanding projects that person has committed to as well, such as a torrent of 2024 releases which was promised at the start of March but has yet to arrive.
But at any rate, if those mags start showing up there, I imagine some work on the UK databases will HAVE to be done, and having the mags in hand (or rather on file) will make doing so more accurately a lot more feasible.
P.S. I agree that Retromags is wrong and someone made a careless mistake when filling out that database, but there actually IS precedent for mags with cover dates going backwards and forwards in time. I discovered this myself when creating the database for Dengeki PlayStation (these dates are correct and very clearly printed on the cover):
#47 (June 13 97)
#48 (July 11 97)
#49 (June 27 97)
#50 (July 11 97)

Well they have been sitting on my entire collection of scans for about six months now so I'm gonna assume adding UK mags to Retromags is an extremely low priority. I have offered to add them to the site myself but not got much in the way of a reply.
Edit: replied before reading the rest of your post but yeah it's fine for it to be known. I offered up my older scans to Retromags a while ago (when it looked like OGM might cease to exist) but looks increasingly like they won't ever get added.

Don't take it personally. It's not YOUR scans, or even UK scans, that aren't a priority. It's the website itself that is no longer a priority. And if your PMs are ignored - welcome to the club. It's not even just that they aren't ever answered, it's that they're never even READ (which is obvious, as their PM software tags messages as either "read" or "unread."
Retromags is something of a rudderless ship. Once complete collections of Nintendo Power, Gamepro, and EGM were scanned, the people in charge sort of faded into the background, since those were the only things they were personally interested in.
I sort of fear for its long-term future (especially considering how much of my own time I've invested in it.) Right now, I believe they make enough in donations to cover costs and then some (and hopefully any excess is saved for future costs rather than going into someone's dinner-and-a-movie fund), but if keeping the site operational ever required them to reach into their own pockets I have to wonder if they would.
I will point out, however, that since you were made a team member, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to upload things yourself. Unless you don't have a password to the QNAP, I guess. Get that, and you're good to go.

E-Day doesn't need anyone's permission to approve a scan, but as a rule he doesn't handle ANY administrative duties. None. Never has, never will. If Phillyman ever decides to close the site, it's possible that SOMEONE may step in and offer to take it over, but it won't be E-Day. He simply has no desire to deal with admin stuff and has stated so in the past. So there's no point in sending him things to approve.
Phillyman might respond to you at some point, but it's pretty unlikely. He doesn't make much time for the site anymore. It could be that his personal life has been so completely crazy for the past several years that he simply hasn't had a moment to spare. Or he could have just lost the passion for magazine scans. Either way, don't get your hopes up.

The 90s probably had the most amount of unconventional peripherals for both consoles and IBM-compatibles (and even the other home computers had their share of wacky devices). Nowadays we have fewer choices and even industry-backed peripherals like the PSVR struggle to make even.

What attracted me to PSM back in the day was the fact that they got actual comics professionals to do their covers. That's Art Adams on cover duty. He somehow avoided being lumped into the "hot artist" craze of the early 90s, even though he was better than most of them. Perhaps because he'd already been around for several years at that point so wasn't considered "new" enough, or perhaps simply because he never did put out a lot of full monthly books. Regardless, whenever he DOES draw something, it's a treat.
Here's his rendering of The Baroness, because I like G.I.JOE, and because the Baroness is a smoking hot bad-girl guns/glasses/leather fetish rolled into one. ;D

I only sent E-Day a scan because I don't have admin rights to approve it. He's one of the only other people to contact there so not sure what to do.
Quote from: Pulstar on May 06, 2025, 08:28 PMThe 90s probably had the most amount of unconventional peripherals for both consoles and IBM-compatibles (and even the other home computers had their share of wacky devices). Nowadays we have fewer choices and even industry-backed peripherals like the PSVR struggle to make even.
It was such a weird hybrid of a console and a peripherical. A Swiss army knife of a control system with its own specific software. Truly nothing like it.

Great to hear, take it easy, you've earned it. Regardless that we've never met in real life (or even had much conversation really), your efforts (along with all the contributors here) have brought and continue to bring a lot to my life during a difficult time.

Hey everyone,
Sorry for the lack of updates. I've mostly been watching movies on the sofa lately on account of the hole in my groin meaning sitting in a chair hasn't been all that comfortable. Starting to feel better with it healing up so today I have managed to sit on a chair without the pain which means over the next couple of days I will start to catch up on getting the site updated.

Take your time mate, heal up.
No worries, no stress and no lifting the first couple of months. May you be as good as new Kiwi!
Take your time man. Your health is more important than this website.
No rush mate, it'll take me at least a decade to fully explore the stuff that's already here!

Unfortunately, you'll never see a message saying "kitsunebi brings us 5 issues of _______" or "here's another 6 issues of ______from kitsunebi." The best I can do is one at a time, unless you want me to stockpile them for several months between releases.
But at any rate, here's a single, solitary issue of PC Games (https://www.oldgamemags.com/forum/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;id=13399), all by its lonesome. Please try to look past its crippling insecurity caused by feelings of inadequacy.

Getting back into scanning myself with three issues of Warplane added to the download area. The mighty Phantom. I had photos of one of these that my father took when one visited New Zealand for the opening of Auckland Airport in 1966. He said the Ozzie Mirages were nice but the USAF aircraft stole the show!!

Hooray for non-blurry non-distorted pages! There's a lot you can do with Photoshop, but fixing page curvature/blurriness caused by bound mags being scanned on a flatbed is something that simply can't be fixed, only cropped away or left for all to see as proof of how the mag wasn't debound.
