PLAY magazine shuts down

Another one bites the dust. Thankfully there's a number of issues archived on this website. PLAY was always a nice alternative the official offerings. Like all these magazines, I'm amazed it lasted as long as it has!

I'm guessing you didn't actually read the linked article which detailed exactly that!!

No I did not although to clarify I meant the name PLAY. I'm sure the mag has made the PLAY title longer than 2021.

No it hasn't. PlayStation Official Magazine (UK) was discontinued in 2021 at issue 187 with Play taking over the mantle the following month. Sony probably wanted to discontinue the "Official" title just as Nintendo did to them previously as well so they simply renamed the magazine to Play given they had already acquired that title off Imagine when they bought them out.

The old Imagine produced version of Play was a totally different mag to the Future produced title though, just as their PC Gamer (USA) was vastly superior the the UK version IMHO.

Is it though?  I suspect that most people who disagree never actually compared the two thoroughly.  Anyway, I agree wholeheartedly.  No one's saying the UK edition was trash, but (early) PC Gamer USA is just better in the eyes of many, myself included.  Nothing wrong with thinking otherwise of course, but I wouldn't consider it a controversial choice.

For what it's worth, I too agree. Early PC Gamer USA was the better magazine. I think for a lot of people their preference will simply be what they have nostalgic attachments to. That, and given we're talking about magazines released on opposite ends of the Atlantic Ocean, it's likely one side never experienced the other.

In any event, it's no big deal at the end of the day.
