Quote from: kitsunebi on Mar 25, 2024, 03:20 PMSorry, you don't get to decide which ethnic slurs are OK.  "Jap" is offensive to most Japanese people (and others besides) so it's not OK to use, ever, unless you're writing dialogue for a fictional character who is supposed to be racist.  Being sensitive to avoiding offensive racial slurs is not American culture, it's just being a decent human being.
I'm not as overly sensitive like you are to these things so it doesn't bother me. Jap is short for Japanese like USA is short for United States of America that's why the magazine used that abbreviation so not sure how it's racist. I mean most things are racist if you look hard enough I guess. Back then it wasn't considered racist and was the obvious use of an abbreviation.

Quote from: Kiwi on Mar 27, 2024, 04:05 PMI have Song of the South but it really could do with a high def transfer. Getting away from the slavery connotations and all, it was the first movie to combine animation and real actors so it's a treasure purely from that perspective.

Unfortunately Disney are too PC to probably ever release it again which is a shame when you look at the fact they added a message at the beginning of the original Aladdin to warn viewers of the racial caricatures used and that they were a product of the time so you would think they could do the same for Song of the South.
I completely agree. I'm not sure if the UK even got a DVD release? It's on VHS I guess but yeah an HD release is ideal. Song of the South is a weird one as it seems to indicate slavery is okay which would mean the film is racist yet the lead character is not only black but inspiring which would go against that narrative view. The lead actor did a good job and it's a shame people at the top can't look past problems that are insignificant to the good the film does.

Ignorance of racism doesn't excuse you from it.  So let me educate you.

"Jap" is not an abbreviation, it is a racial slur.  "Jap" is no more acceptable than any other slur, a list of which I'm not going to lower myself to typing out.  It came into use primarily during WWII as a derogatory way of referring to the enemy at that time.  If you are using it in your everyday speech, you are using racist terminology that is rude and offensive.  Perhaps you were raised with those around you using this racist term, so you think it's normal and unoffensive, but you are now aware that it is not.  An intelligent person would recognize this and stop immediately.

Also, it WAS racist "back then," it was just more accepted (by non-Japanese people) because there were more people ignorant to its offensiveness than there are now.  The "n" word also used to be acceptable in polite society, but that doesn't mean it wasn't racist.

Again, if you think it isn't racist, YOU ARE WRONG.  If you think it's not offensive, YOU ARE WRONG.  If you think that YOU get to decide whether other people should consider it racist or offensive, YOU ARE WRONG.

It's fine that you aren't offended by it yourself, but please stop defending its use, because if other people are telling you they find it offensive and you shrug it off and accuse them of being "overly sensitive," it makes you seem like a terrible person.

I truly hope that this is the last word on this.  No need for an apology (which would be the only possible appropriate response) - let's just drop it please.  Most message boards have rules about using hate speech, and while this one might not, it's a good rule to abide by regardless.

Thank god a new "new release" thread just got started...
