Quote from: bigkev on Nov 24, 2024, 02:33 PMHaving read some of those PlayGamer magazines (which I believed ceased publication after 28 issues) Does anyone else think that console gaming magazines that debut in the middle of a console generation are at a disadvantage readership & sales wise compared to long-running magazines that began their lifespan at the very beginning of a console generation and have already garnered a solid subscription base? Just a thought.

I'm always a bit amazed at the sheer number of gaming publications the UK used to publish.  Sometimes you'd have three or four different mags, all specific to a single console, ALL FROM THE SAME PUBLISHER(!) being published at the same time.  And then there'd be 3 or 4 other publishers doing the same thing.  There were so many different mags being churned out, it's a wonder any of them survived.  I can definitely see why someone would just prefer sticking with an established mag rather than try to figure out which of the "throw 'em at the wall and see what sticks" publications that were constantly appearing were worth buying.
Definitely mate. The PS2 era in particular was ridiculously oversaturated when it came to unofficial UK-based magazines. Some of them even had the same writers working on different magazines who would use the same review of a particular game in other publications they worked with.

My dad used to be spoiled for choice each week buying a new computer magazine. Good times.  :)

CD-ROM Games Gold Edition Vol.02 is now available albeit in a water damaged condition thanks to Jason. Mainly the cover though with pretty much all the content pages being okay.

It was the typical Future Publishing strategy at the end of the '90s: to publish as many titles as possible, often duplicating with each other (like when they bought and relaunched PC Review from EMAP, even if they already published PC Format), to cover the maximum newspaper shelf space and get as much advertising money as possible. It didn't matter if these publications didn't last, the goal was to kill the smaller competitors with less titles - and sometimes buy these titles to cover even more space.

EDIT: is this my first post? I thought I posted a bit some time ago, weird.

What I find puzzling nowadays is the myriad of magazines still being sold for other hobbies except videogames. I get that people now get their news online but I always thought a few more would survive.
